Waste and recycling

Recycling and waste collections:

  • Currently services are operating with no significant disruption.

  • Collections of general waste and food waste are being prioritised.

  • Please note that disposable paper masks should not be put in your paper and card recycling bin - put paper masks in your general waste bin and tie the bag securely.

  • It is more important than ever to ensure that you do everything you can to minimise the amount of waste you produce, that recycling is clean, dry and properly sorted, and that rubbish bags are all securely tied to help prevent spills and protect our collection teams and the public. Thank you for your continued support.

Self-isolating households:

Households that are self-isolating (because a member of the household is displaying symptom of coronavirus) should follow the government's 'Stay at home' advice which states:

  • Store personal waste, such as used tissues and disposable cleaning cloths, within disposable rubbish bags.

  • Place these bags into a second bag, tied securely and kept separate from other waste.

  • These bags should be put aside for at least 72 hours before being put in your usual external general waste bin.

  • Dispose of your other household waste as normal.

Villiers Road Household Reuse and Recycling Centre (‘the tip’):

  • The Household Reuse and Recycling Centre (HRRC) at Villiers Road is open for essential visits only - visits to the site are strictly by appointment only and must be booked in advance via the website.

  • Only try to book a visit to the HRRC if it’s absolutely essential - Households should only take waste to the HRRC if it cannot be safely stored at home and no alternative disposal options are available. Our recycling, rubbish, garden waste and bulky waste collection services are all running - please try to use these to manage your waste instead of taking it to the HRRC.

  • HRRC booking slots are available 2-3 days in advance.

  • Demand for HRRC booking slots is currently very high and places are limited. DO NOT travel to the HRRC if you don’t have a valid booking - you will not be granted access. Capacity at the site is being monitored and more booking slots will be made available if it is safe to do so, so please keep checking the website.

  • Make sure you familiarise yourself with the temporary conditions and restrictions at the site before making your booking: read the new Reuse and Recycling Centre rules and pre-book a visit

  • These important changes will help the site run safely and in accordance with government guidelines designed to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Garden waste collection service (paid for)

  • The Garden Waste Collection Service is running as normal, with scheduled fortnightly collections taking place across the borough.

  • Existing subscribers - If you’re an existing subscriber, please continue to present your bin(s) for collection on your collection day. For details about what can and can’t recycle using the service visit the Collections Guide section of our website.

  • If your subscription ended in March and you’ve not yet renewed, please do so immediately via our website. We have written to all existing customers that have not yet re-subscribed reminding them to do so.

  • New subscribers - new customer subscriptions are being accepted via the website

Bonfires - please be a considerate neighbour:

  • There has been a significant increase in the number of complaints we’re receiving about garden and allotment bonfires in recent weeks.

  • Please be aware that bonfires harm the air quality in your local area and could affect the wellbeing of a neighbour with an underlying health condition - the last thing they need right now.

  • If you have garden waste, please don’t burn it; dedicate a corner of your garden to store it safely until the Villiers Road Recycling Centre is able to re-open. If you subscribe to our garden waste collection service, please note that collections are taking place as normal (see above).

Bulky waste collection service (paid-for):

  • We have temporarily reduced the number of slots available for future bulky waste collection bookings. This will allow crew members to be re-deployed to support other priority services. There is no disruption to this service and collections are taking place smoothly.
