What happens if I don't pay my Council Tax?

Missing your Council Tax payments

If you miss an instalment of your Council Tax you will be sent a reminder. The reminder asks you to pay the outstanding amount within seven days. If you do not then we will take further action.

If you bring the account up to date and fall behind at another point, later in the year, we will send you a reminder for that instalment.

We only send a maximum of two reminders per year, so if you to fall behind with your instalments for a third time in a year, you would not receive a reminder. Instead we will send a final demand notice.

This means you will need to pay the remaining amount of Council Tax due for the year in one go. If you ever receive a final demand notice it is very important that you contact us straight away.

If you receive a reminder when you have just made payment this is because the payment generally takes four working days to reach us (seven if paying at the Post Office). Until we receive that payment the instalment remains unpaid and a reminder may be sent.

You can solve the problem by paying your Council Tax on time or by contacting us as soon as you realise there is a problem so we can agree a payment plan.

If you do not believe that you owe the money asked for then let us know as soon as possible and we can discuss the issue before it is taken any further and extra costs are incurred.
