Discretionary Grant Fund set up to help small businesses

The Discretionary Grant Fund has been set up by the Government to help certain small and micro businesses, as well as charities that were outside the scope of the previous business grant schemes.

Eligible businesses will receive grants of either up to £5,000 or up to £2,500 depending on the category. Applicants must complete our online application form and provide supporting evidence. We will assess all applications and overall demand before making any payments - the timetable is outlined below.

An initial application window will be open between 12noon on 9 June and 5pm on 19 June. We anticipate first payments being made from the end of June.

Grants up to £5,000 will be given to small and micro businesses (up to 49 employees) in shared offices or other flexible workspaces with fixed ongoing property costs; charity properties in receipt of charitable business rates relief which would otherwise have been eligible for Small Business Rates Relief; and licensed Bed and Breakfast businesses which currently pay Council Tax and where the applicant lives in the property.

Grants up to £2,500 will be given to regular Kingston-based market traders with a stall trading in the same place for at least 5 days per week.

Our borough has been allocated approximately £1.5m for this scheme and our aim is to use this to help as many businesses as possible with meaningful grants. In preparing our scheme, we have consulted with partners in Kingston Chamber of Commerce and Kingston First BID.

The initial application window is open to a range of businesses based on the Government’s prioritised sectors. If funds remain after this initial funding round, a further application window may be opened and may be available to other businesses.

Depending on the demand, the eligibility thresholds may be shifted or the actual level of individual grants to be paid out may be adjusted. To maintain scheme deliverability, the council may change the schemes design and criteria at any point. Therefore, applying for a grant and meeting the criteria will not guarantee a grant will be paid, or if it will be at a specified amount. You can check eligibility for other Government grants and support on the Government website.
