Kingston Council's Christmas and New Year opening hours

Find out more about opening hours for our services over Christmas and New Year.

We are open as normal, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with the exception of the following:

  • Tuesday 24 December (Christmas Eve) - 9am to 1pm
  • Wednesday 25 December (Christmas Day) - closed
  • Thursday 26 December (Boxing Day) - closed
  • Tuesday 31 December (New Years Eve) - 9am to 1pm
  • Wednesday 1 January (New Years Day) - closed

If you need urgent assistance outside of office hours or on the days we are closed, please see the following:

Adult social care
Call 0208 770 5000. If you think someone is in immediate danger, please call 999.

Children's social care
If you have a safeguarding concern about a child, please contact our Emergency Duty Service on 020 8770 5000 to speak to the duty social worker. If you think a child is in immediate danger, please call 999.

Emergency housing repairs (council tenants only)
Call 020 8547 5003.

Sexual health and emergency contraception
For free and confidential NHS sexual health services, including emergency contraception and STI testing, the Wolverton Centre at Kingston Hospital will be operating Walk-in & Wait clinics between 8am and 1pm on Tuesday 24 December, Friday 27 December, Monday 30 December, Tuesday 31 December and Thursday 2 January. 

Contraceptive and Sexual Health clinics and KU19 (free, confidential service for people aged 19 and under) clinics, run by Your Healthcare, operate in community locations with their normal opening hours on 23, 24 and 27 to 31 December. They will be closed on Christmas Day (25 December), Boxing Day (26 December) and New Year’s Day (1 January). Find out more about the Your Healthcare clinics on our website

People under 25 years of age can also get emergency contraception, chlamydia testing and free condoms from both ACE Pharmacy, 1-3 Ace Parade, Chessington (open on Boxing Day 10am - 2pm, closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day) and Boots Pharmacy in the Bentalls Centre, which is open every day except Christmas Day.

Domestic or sexual violence
The Kingston DV Hub is open except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

The One Stop Shop, which normally takes place on Mondays, will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

If you’re in immediate danger, please call 999. If you need support and advice out of hours, please contact the 24 hour National Domestic Violence Helpline on 0808 2000 247. The helpline is open on bank holidays.

Rough sleeping
If you are concerned about a person rough sleeping you should report this via the StreetLink website or call 0300 500 0914.

To report a crime and other concerns
Call 101, the police non-emergency number, to report theft, criminal damage, drug use or dealing in your neighbourhood.

You should always call 999 when it is an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, someone suspected of a crime is nearby, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened.

Villiers Road Household Reuse and Recycling Centre (HRRC)

  • Christmas Eve, open from 7.30am to 12pm
  • Christmas Day, closed
  • Boxing Day, closed
  • New Year's Eve, open from 7.30am to 5pm
  • New Year's Day, closed

For other dates and times visit the HRRC webpage. The last admission to the centre is 15 minutes before closing on all days. If you are visiting in a van or other large vehicle, please check the website for access arrangements ahead of your visit.

Waste and recycling collections
Please see the 2019 waste and recycling collection date changes to see any changes for the Christmas period.

We will collect and compost your discarded real Christmas trees. Just leave them at the boundary of your property on the same day as your wheelie bin collection between 13 January and 24 January 2020. You are also able to dispose of your Christmas tree at the Villiers Road Household Reuse and Recycling Centre (HRRC).

Registering a birth, death or marriage 

  • Monday 23 December - 9am to 4pm - Normal service for birth and death registrations. Marriages by appointment only. 
  • Tuesday 24 December (Christmas Eve) - 9am to 4pm - normal service for birth and death registrations. Appointments only for marriages and civil partnerships.  
  • Wednesday 25 December (Christmas Day) - closed
  • Thursday 26 December (Boxing Day) - closed. Emergency issue of burial certificates only. 
  • Friday 27 December - 9am to 4pm - walk in service for birth and death registrations. Priority given to death registrations. Appointments only for marriages and civil partnerships. 
  • Saturday 28 December - Emergency issue of burial certificates only. Appointments only for marriages and civil partnerships 
  • Sunday 29 December -  closed. Emergency issue of burial certificates only.
  • Monday 30 December - open from 9am to 4pm. Walk in service for birth and death registrations. Priority given to death registrations. Marriage and civil partnerships by appointment only. 
  • Tuesday 31 December (New Years Eve) - open from 9am to 4pm. Walk in service for birth and death registrations. Priority given to death registrations. Marriage and civil partnerships by appointment only. 
  • Wednesday 1 January (New Years Day) - closed. Emergency issue of burial certificates only. 
  • Thursday 2 January - 9am to 4pm. Walk in service for birth and death registrations. Priority given to death registrations. Marriage and civil partnerships by appointment only. 
  • Friday 3 January - 9am to 4pm. Walk in service for birth and death registrations. Priority given to death registrations. Marriage and civil partnerships by appointment only. 

If for religious reasons a burial must take place within 24 hours after death, heads of faith can contact a registrar on 020 8547 4600, between the hours of 8am and 10am. Please note, this service is not available on Christmas Day.

Kingston Bereavement Services
The cemetery is open daily, 9am to 4pm (from 10am on Bank Holidays and weekends). There will be no burials or cremations on:

  • 25 December (Christmas Day)
  • 26 December (Boxing Day)
  • 31 December (New Year's Eve)

Kingston Adult Education
The King Charles Centre term ends on Friday 13 December and restarts on Monday 6 January. You can continue to enrol at the centre or by phone up until 5pm on Monday 23 December. For more information, visit the adult education webpage

Kingston Music Service
Closed between 25 December and 1 January 2020. To contact the music service, please email [email protected].

Libraries

All libraries will close from 1pm on Tuesday 24 December (Christmas Eve) and will reopen as normal on Saturday 28 December and will close from 1pm on Tuesday 31 December and reopen as normal on Thursday 2 January.

Kingston Museum and History Centre 
Kingston History Centre and Kingston Museum will be closed from 1pm on Tuesday 24 December (Christmas Eve) and reopen on Saturday 28 December. Both sites will then close at 1pm on Tuesday 31 December and reopen as normal from Thursday 2 January.

Leisure centres

Kingfisher Leisure Centre

Due to roof repairs, the swimming pool is closed until 2 January, all other facilities open at the times below. Please use your next nearest swimming pool, which is at the Malden Centre. For more information, visit the Kingfisher website
