Kingston crowds met the Saxon king with enthusiasm and occasional bemusement. Over the weekend, thousands of residents and visitors enjoyed the living history encampment with its battle demonstrations, storytelling, games and crafts. The event hosted more than 30 community stalls, farm animals, falconry displays, music, beekeeping, flax growing, tapestry-making, a working Saxon Forge and even a virtual reality experience!
Scott Furlong, Kingston 2025 Programme Director, Kingston Council, said:
Not only was Athel's Town great fun but we heard from our residents that they appreciated an event that was free, focused on Kingston’s history, and provided an opportunity for all generations to enjoy time together. It showcased so many local groups that make Kingston the fantastic place it is today and continue to strengthen our community.
Athel's Town is one highlight from Kingston 2025, a six-month cultural celebration of Kingston past, present and future. The programme continues throughout the summer with free workshops, talks and public art to enjoy. September sees both a River Cultures Festival on the waterfront, another joyous celebration of the Kingston communities' enduring relationship with our rivers and the return of the much loved Kingston Carnival.
