Fire at Villiers Road Waste and Recycling Centre (Kingston)
There was a fire in the early hours of today (Wednesday 21 December 2022) at the Villiers Road Waste Transfer Station in Kingston, which adjoins the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre (HRRC).
Ten fire crews attended the scene and the fire was quickly brought under control. We would like to thank the fire service for their quick and effective response.
There were no injuries. Damage to the site is being assessed but appears to be relatively minor. The cause of the fire will be investigated.
The waste transfer station and the adjoining Household Reuse and Recycling Centre are currently closed. Contingency measures are being implemented to limit the impact this will have on recycling and waste collections. However, residents in Kingston whose collections are scheduled for today (Wednesday) should expect some disruption: collections may happen later than usual or may not take place at all. Households affected should leave their recycling and waste bins out at the front of their properties and our crews will get to them as soon as they can.
Update: Household Reuse and Recycling Centre has now reopened and will operate as usual tomorrow (Thursday 22 December). We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
