Annexes

If your home has an annexe, the annexe may qualify for a Council Tax discount.

Annexe exemption

You may not have to pay any council tax for your annexe if it is:

  • empty, and forms part of a single property and cannot be let separately or occupied due to planning conditions 
  • occupied by a relative who is one or more of the following:
    • over 65
    • substantially or permanently disabled
    • severely mentally impaired

Annexe discounts 

If your home has an annexe, the annexe may qualify for a 50% discount Council Tax discount if it is: 

  • occupied by a relative 
  • used by someone that lives in the main home

How to apply 

Use our general enquiries form to make your claim. Tell us:

  • your Council Tax account number
  • the address where you wish to claim the discount 
  • if you are applying for a full exemption or a 50% discount
  • how you qualify for the reduction, for example the name of the person occupying, and how they meet the criteria for the discount

Apply now

If you receive a discount by mistake or are no longer entitled to a discount, you must let us know within 21 days, or you could be fined or prosecuted.

We review all discounts and exemptions each year. You will receive a review letter, which you must complete and send back to us or lose any reduction.
