Equality impact assessments

Equality Impact Assessments are a process to ensure that a project, policy or service change does not discriminate against any protected characteristics.

EQIAs are a vital step in ensuring that our services are accessible to everybody in our community. EQIAs also help us to give due regard to our responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 by considering the impact of proposed activities on potentially vulnerable people who are protected under the Act.

EQIAs should be carried out prior to any final decision about activity being made. When carrying out an EQIA our aim is to:

  • Identify any effect or likely effect on different groups within the community

  • Making sure that, as far as possible, any negative consequences for minority groups are eliminated or minimised and opportunities for promoting equality are maximised
