Introduction to the course

Do you like the idea of drawing regularly, keeping a visual journal and bringing ideas to life? Have you always wanted to keep a creative sketchbook but struggle to start and get into a routine? Would you like to get back into art and rediscover your creativity? If so, this course is for you. You will explore techniques and mediums to tap into your imagination and develop your ideas and skills; you will learn how to overcome the blank page block through sketching exercises, drawing prompts, challenges, and painting projects, to further your sketchbook practice and develop your creative potential.

What will I learn?

In this course you will learn essential pencil mark making techniques, practice sketching exercises, explore colour theory and create your own colour palette. You will experiment with a range of varied materials such as wax and oil pastels, paint and coloured pencils, and learn to draw inspiration from the world around you to develop your sketchbook practice, create an interesting visual journal and overcome creative blocks.

What are the entry requirements?

This course is perfect for full beginners to kick-start their creative practice, learn essential skills and build confidence, as well as more experienced artists looking to incorporate sketchbooking into their routine.

What do I need to bring with me to class?

What to bring on your first lesson:
A4 sketchbook (Recommended: Artway Enviro A4 Portrait 170gsm, Silvine A4 portrait casebound 140gsm sketchbook, Royal Talens Art Creations 21 x 29.7, Daler Rowney Ebony A4 portrait);
Sketching pencil (HB to 4B ideal), eraser and sharpener;
Coloured pencils: recommended brands Faber-Castell Polychromos, Prismacolour Premier, Derwent Coloursoft, Caran Dache Luminance).
As the course progress you will need also need watercolour or gouache paints and other materials but please discuss with your tutor before purchasing additional materials.

What can I do after my course has finished?

By the end of the course, you will have a better understanding of your creative preferences, confidence to develop your own idea and express your own visual language in your sketchbook practice. The course is an ideal introduction if you wish to proceed to more specific courses such as drawing or illustration, gouache, or watercolour painting.

Available concessions
An early booking discount of 5% is available for all enrolments up to and including the 31st of August. This course is priced at £146.30 for individuals in receipt of a income based state benefit. You will need to be able to provide relevant documentation as evidence. Concessions cannot be used in conjunction with each other.
