Introduction to the course

Learn how to paint with gouache and unlock your creativity. In this course you will learn essential techniques to paint with the vibrant and versatile gouache and how to incorporate other mediums such as coloured pencils, paint markers and pastels to create striking illustrations.

What will I learn?

You will learn about materials and surfaces, explore colour theory and practice essential techniques such as colour-mixing, layering, creating blends and brushstrokes. You will explore how to sketch and paint patterns, botanical motifs, portraits, animals, landscapes and more. Through guided exercises and sketchbook practice you will gain confidence in painting with gouache as well as be inspired to develop your own ideas and personal illustration style

What are the entry requirements?

Perfect for full beginners or more experienced artists looking to learn a new medium or develop their own practice with guidance.

What do I need to bring with me to class?

A4 sketchbook (watercolour or mixed media paper preferable, at least 140gsm. Recommended: Talens Art Creations 140gsm 21 x 29.7, Daler-Rowney Ebony 150gsm portrait, Artway Enviro A4 170gsm, Silvine A4 portrait casebound 140gsm);
Sketching pencil (HB to 4B ideal), eraser and sharpener;
Gouache paint tubes in primary colours and white (Windsor & Newton Designers gouache primary set is perfect for beginners and more experienced artists);
Watercolour/acrylic paintbrushes in varied sizes (round 000, 1 and 3 and a flat brush recommended. Brands: Windsor & Newton Cotman, ProArte Masterstroke or similar);
plastic palette and water pot.

What can I do after my course has finished?

By the end of this course you will have gained knowledge and confidence with gouache. You could carry on the following term to improve your practice and have guidance whilst creating your own art or progress onto a different medium or illustration course.

Available concessions
An early booking discount of 5% is available for all enrolments up to and including the 31st of August. This course is priced at £199.50 for individuals in receipt of a income based state benefit. You will need to be able to provide relevant documentation as evidence. Concessions cannot be used in conjunction with each other.
