Hate crime

Safe ways to step in

If you witness a hate incident or a hate crime, safety should be your priority. Never do anything which could put you or somebody else in more danger.

In an emergency, always call 999.

How to help

First:check if it is safe to stay where you are. If you need to leave the situation, call 999 or seek other help once you are in a safe place.

Look:Looking or turning away can send a message that the behaviour is acceptable. Paying attention to details about what is happening and who is involved is helpful for making a report.

Act:Tell staff members or security personnel who may be able to help. You could also ask for support from other people nearby.

Report:Once you are in a safe place, you can help the victim to make a report or do so yourself. Remember, you and the victim can remain anonymous if you prefer. There are support services who can help with this and you can also use an easy read form.

Support: When it is safe to do so, ask the victim if they are OK. They might need help speaking to a member of staff, contacting a friend or family member or finding a support service.
