Statement: Kingston Council's reaction to plans for a third runway at Heathrow
"We will continue to make the case against the expansion of Heathrow in whatever way we can."
Cllr Kevin Davis, Leader of Kingston Council, said:
"This is not a decision that will get much support across South West London. Based on the evidence submitted so far, the council's position is that on balance it supports the expansion of Gatwick not Heathrow.
"The creation of new flight paths across Kingston, increased noise and air pollution, coupled with the lost opportunity that Gatwick presents to get some infrastructure investment in the south of the borough, conspire to make Heathrow a flawed answer to a long standing question.
"We will continue to make the case against the expansion of Heathrow in whatever way we can and will be discussing with Gatwick how we can support the inevitable legal case that will follow. We will need substantial modelling on the impact of this decision on our air quality and road network.
"Heathrow will be mired in legal process and planning for years, so the question remains as to how we increase capacity quickly and that answer is expansion at Gatwick. We will be urging Gatwick to consider getting on with that process, despite this disappointing news."
