New Tier 4 restrictions: A message from Kingston's Director of Public Health

Following the introduction of Tier 4 restrictions across London, Kingston Council's Director of Public Health, Iona Lidington, is encouraging everyone to follow the new rules and keep each other safe

"The announcement of Tier 4 restrictions in Kingston and across London and much of the South East, reflects the alarming increase in cases of COVID-19 over the last few weeks. Despite the efforts of many, we have not been able to reduce the spread and we must now do even more to protect each other, and reduce pressure on our hospitals and NHS staff.

"The risk of catching or passing COVID-19 to others is now higher than at any point since the first wave, and together with the news of a new strain of the virus, the need to be rigorous in following Hands, Face, Space has never been greater, but we must go further.

"The Tier 4 rules mean we must all stay home as much as possible. You should not leave or be outside your home unless you have a permitted purpose to do so, such as buying food or medicine, to attend a medical appointment or COVID-19 test, or to exercise.

"The new travel restrictions and changes to how we can celebrate Christmas are truly disappointing for us all.  After a tough year I had hoped that we would be able to spend time with loved ones, but now it is clear that the best we can do for our families is to keep our celebrations small, local and safe. You must not mix households, except with your support bubble if permitted.

"The rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine to Kingston’s most vulnerable residents is already underway, but more time is needed so we can protect those who need it most. By staying home and reducing the risk of transmission we can help ensure the NHS is not overwhelmed.

"Thank you to every Kingston resident who has made a huge effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect our local communities. By continuing to work together, staying home, and keeping our Christmas celebrations small and local we can each help Keep Kingston Safe."

- Iona Lidington, Director of Public Health, Kingston Council.
