Kingston Council has secured £120,000 of government funding for three specialised accessible toilets for people with profound learning or physical disabilities.

The new Changing Places toilets are part of the council’s commitment to being a fairer and more inclusive place for all. Communities are now being asked to share their feedback on the plans.

Over 250,000 people in the UK need the specialist equipment and space provided in Changing Places facilities to safely and comfortably access toilets out of home. These three larger and more accessible toilets will be open in the borough by the end of June and will help make Kingston a more welcoming and inclusive place to live in and visit.

More than 1,000 residents gave feedback in a 2021 survey on public toilets which highlighted that more of this kind of facility is needed. This evidence supported the council’s  bid for funding. The council is also continuing to work on the wider provision of public toilets across the borough.

The Changing Places toilets will be installed at Latchmere Recreation Ground, Canbury Gardens and next to the Hook Centre.

The online Changing Places survey is open until 29 February 2024.
