Kingston Adult Education achieves 'good' Ofsted report

Kingston Adult Education (KAE), which provides courses for over 3,500 learners, has achieved a ‘good’ report from Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills.

The inspection, carried out in March 2015, recognised the continuing improvement in the quality of education since the previous observation in November 2013, upgrading the service from ‘requires improvement’ to ‘good’.

The service achieved a ‘good’ in every category of the Ofsted report.

This result is particularly welcome as it comes off the back of a time of uncertainty for the service, which was relocated from North Kingston to Surbiton in September 2014 to make way for a new, much-needed secondary school.

In their report, the Ofsted Inspectors applauded teaching at KAE, saying:

“A large majority of learners benefit from good support and motivation provided by enthusiastic and talented tutors.

“Tutors use a wide variety of stimulating teaching methods that often inspire learners to produce high quality work.”

English and mathematics are a key focus for Ofsted, and these subjects were praised in the latest report:

“Well-trained, specialist tutors teach English and mathematics well which leads to a high and increasing number of learners taking and passing their qualifications.”

Cllr Andrea Craig, Lead Member for Children, Youth and Adult Learning at Kingston Council said:

“This has been a particularly challenging period for Kingston Adult Education. Moving premises was not easy for the staff or students. To have significantly improved standards during this time is testament to their hard work, commitment and determination.

“Ofsted noted that the areas that have improved the most are English and mathematics qualifications for 16 to 18 year olds. This is such good news and will, undoubtedly, help give these students in Kingston the best opportunities to find employment.”
