Kingston Council steps up its ambition to foster an inclusive borough

Kingston Council is proud to formally launch ‘Inclusive Kingston’, a bold new Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy which demonstrates a step up in ambition to foster an inclusive borough.

The strategy, which will last from 2021-25, was developed through engagement with community groups, partners and residents. It covers all nine of the protected characteristics.

Since the strategy was approved by committee in July, the council has helped local groups to host a Disability Awareness Day in the Market Square and once again flown the Black Lives Matter flag to publicly demonstrate our unwavering commitment to equality and inclusivity.

Work on the strategy’s action plan, which you can access below, has begun as we continue to work towards an Inclusive Kingston.

Watch the video below to see Cllr Tim Cobbett, Portfolio Holder for Communities and Engagement’s full statement on the strategy, along with some of the community groups that we work with:

Through four key objectives, the strategy covers all aspects of the Council’s work, aiming to embed equality across all that we do. The strategies objectives are:

  • To listen to, and learn from , the diverse communities we serve
  • To celebrate the diversity of our borough and champion communities, making sure that Kingston is a safe borough for all
  • To deliver accessible and inclusive policies and services that meet the diverse needs of our communities
  • To be the best employer for people of all backgrounds
