Kingston’s First World War centenary commemoration in pictures

Kingston’s Ancient Market hosted a moving occasion to mark the day 100 years ago that Britain declared war on Germany and joined the First World War.

The Worshipful Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Ken Smith JP, led a civic ceremony which was followed by a procession to All Saints Church where eleven candles were lit, to be extinguished one by one every hour until the last was snuffed out at 11 p.m. -  the time on 4 August 1914 that war was declared.

Pictures from the day can be viewed in our Flickr album.
