Green Community

Save The World Club

For an incredible forty years, Save The World Club has been a powerful force for social and environmental good in Kingston.

With a dedicated membership of 120 individuals, this remarkable organisation stands as a testament to the power of community, making use of surplus food and second-hand household goods to help people in need across the borough.

They reached a significant milestone in December 2023 with the launch of their Community Kitchen, within an expansive 10,000 square foot warehouse at 18 Southsea Road, Kingston, KT1 2EH.

The team undertakes a variety of work on a daily basis, including:

  • Providing nutritious meals for those in need, particularly people with health conditions or in temporary accommodation. Their Community Kitchen serves as a warm space to cook and share - in just six months, over 225 cooking sessions have taken place.

  • Redistributing perishable food rescued from eight local supermarkets, drastically reducing food waste and ensuring it reaches plates, not bins.

  • Supporting individuals and families in crisis by providing essential items like food, clothes, beds, white goods, heating, and furniture, often to those who have nothing.

  • Their vast warehouse is a treasure trove of donated, preloved, retro, and vintage items, open to the public six days a week. This circular economy model not only provides affordable goods but also funds their vital work.

  • They provide life skills training and mentoring, including repairing and restoring. They have trained 72 volunteers in Food Hygiene, extending this crucial certification to partner organisations like Square One Café, Surbiton Community Fridge, Chessington Café and the Waste To Plate project.

  • They organise regular social events that help new communities integrate, celebrating diversity by sharing traditional foods, crafts, art, music, dance, and culture.

  • Save The World Club is an active member of the Kingston Good Food Group, coordinated by Kingston Voluntary Action, which represents over 20 local food poverty initiatives. They also work closely with the council, Refugee Action Kingston, Homeless Groups, and Shinebright UK to achieve their ambitious goals.

  • Crucially, they actively engage and involve both volunteers and the most vulnerable members of the community directly in their invaluable work.

Save The World Club is always eager to welcome new volunteers and supporters - whether you have time to give, goods to donate, or simply want to learn more, reach out to them: www.savetheworldclub.org
