Repair Cafe
For over two years the Repair Cafe, a part of Transition Town Kingston, has been empowering local people to choose repair over waste, while creating a culture of mending and sharing skills.
Launched in February 2023, the Repair Cafe quickly became a popular fixture in the community. It’s part of an international network of neighbourhood repair cafes, all dedicated to promoting the simple yet profound act of repairing items rather than throwing them away.
With around 30 regular volunteers dedicating their time and expertise, the cafe provides a popular service, mending everything from wobbly chairs to faulty toasters.
You can find them in action on the first Saturday of every month, from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm, at Kingston Library.
Here, skilled volunteers offer their time and knowledge to help you fix your broken items. It's not just about getting things mended; it's also about learning. The cafe encourages a collaborative approach, often inviting visitors to watch and even participate in the repair process, empowering them with new skills. This community-focused model not only extends the life of countless items but also strengthens local bonds and reduces our collective environmental footprint.
Bring an Item for Repair: If you have something that needs mending, head over to their website to find out more about what they can fix and how to prepare your item for a visit.
Volunteer Your Skills: Do you have a knack for electronics, textiles, carpentry, or general tinkering? The cafe is always looking for new volunteers to join their friendly team of repairers. It's a fantastic way to give back to the community and help divert waste from landfill.
