New footpath and car park improvements

We are delivering improvement works to create a new footpath and upgrade both car parks. The first phase of the work will be to complete the footpath and then move to the car parks. Our contractor will seek to minimise disruption to site users and keep the car parks open for use other than essential works.

Should you require any further information about these works or have any concerns please do not hesitate to get in touch with our contact centre 0208 547 5002 or environment@kingston.gov.uk

Playground Improvements

In November 2019, we asked for your views on our draft plans for the revamp of Churchfields Recreation playground. Residents had their say at local events and on our consultation portal Kingston: Let’s Talk. Thanks to your great input we have adapted our plans and we are pleased to announce the final design.

You said

The feedback on the plans was positive and included:

  • Asking for more than one trampoline and additional climbing structures.

  • Requesting equipment with a natural wooden design to match the appearance and character of the park.

  • Emphasising the importance of the inclusion of accessible equipment.

  • Wanting more sensory equipment - recommending totem poles.

We Did

Based on your comments we have revised the plans for Churchfields Recreation playground. The changes are:

Inclusive equipment

You requested additional items were made accessible and in response an inclusive hammock swing has been added to the Monkey Jungle Zone and the roundabout in The Bug Discovery Zone has been made accessible for all.

Additional trampoline

We agreed with your feedback that trampolines are a popular feature in other parks within the borough, so we have included an additional trampoline in the Crocodile Swamp Zone to help address the predicted demand.

Climbing apparatus

Our younger residents expressed a preference for more challenging climbing equipment, so we have introduced a large Ixo multiplay structure to the Monkey Jungle zone.

A natural wooden design

Community groups had a preference for some of the equipment to have a more natural design. The Bug Discovery Zone now includes a wooden play train, log steppers, a clatter bridge and swinging steps with an appearance to match that of Churchfields surroundings.

Totem Poles

Feedback suggested that totem poles would be a welcome addition to the Sensory Sandpit Zone. This area will now feature fox and badger animal posts, a height and hand totem, as well as a minibeast and treasure map totem. The poles will add sensory options whilst providing the natural, wooden finish requested for the playground.

Final plan

The final design has integrated play equipment, surfacing and design, creating a play journey. The playground will feature four new distinct play zones - Bug Discovery, Crocodile Swamp, Monkey Jungle, and Inclusive Sensory Sand Zone. Popular existing equipment will be retained and new features, including a cable way will be introduced. Children will now be able to ride on the insect express and play on the toddler pod swing, multi play units, cradle seat swings and inclusive roundabout in the Bug Discovery Zone. An eight-person woodland animal springer, spinning bowl, two trampolines and crocodile multiplay unit will be exciting new features in the Crocodile Swamp. There will be high adrenaline play in the Monkey Jungle with a 5.2m high pyramid climbing net, as well as an Ixo multiplay structure, hurricane swing, hammock swing and the largest pod swing available in the industry. The Inclusive Sensory Sand Zone will have a large sandpit with a wheelchair accessible ramp and will be surrounded by musical games, totem poles, animal faces, sand diggers and picture games for all to enjoy.

Friends of parks

The community groups that work in our parks make a huge difference to the quality of the spaces. They lead on all sorts of activities that make the park a better place. Some run events, some do a lot of gardening, improvements and planting, some run activities and many are involved in the future planning for the park.

If you want to get involved with Churchfields Recreation, contact the local group Friends of Churchfields to find out more. To find out more about other 'Friends of' parks groups in your area, or if you wish to form your own group, please visit our Get involved in your local park page.
