Statement on Thames Water Teddington Direct River Abstraction project

Leader of Kingston Council Andreas Kirsch is encouraging residents to have their say on Thames Water’s Teddington Direct River Abstraction (DRA) project.

The water company is asking for feedback on initial site options for the project.

Councillor Kirsch said:

“I understand the importance of securing the future of London’s water supply and taking action to address any water shortages we may face going forward. However, I have concerns about whether or not this is the right site for Thames Water’s abstraction project and the potential impact during the construction period on Kingston and North Kingston residents. I also have concerns around the potential ecological impact of the scheme.

“It is really important that residents across the Royal Borough of Kingston, as well as our neighbouring boroughs, are able to continue to enjoy the enormous health and wellbeing benefits of the River Thames.

“Kingston’s riverside heritage is treasured by people all across the borough. The Thames is a special place for residents and visitors to enjoy - to swim, to do watersports, to see wildlife and to spend time with family and friends. This special landscape must be safeguarded for current and future generations and I strongly encourage residents to have their say in Thames Water’s consultation.”

Find out more about the project and have your say, before Monday 11 December 2023.
