Waste reduction and composting

Reusable nappies

In Kingston, we produce around 2035 tonnes of single-use disposable nappies and wet wipes as general waste each year - the same as the weight of 1000 cars.

In 2018, there were 2025 births in Kingston. On average, a baby using single-use nappies emits an estimated 550 kg of CO2 during their nappy-wearing period.

If all 2025 babies used single-use nappies, it would result in 1113.75 tonnes of CO2 emissions. That’s roughly equal to 2,784,375 miles driven in a petrol car.

Reusable nappies can also help you save money. The average family can easily spend more than £1000 on disposable nappies, whereas all the reusable nappies you need for full-time use can be bought for around £150.

Get vouchers to buy reusable nappies

We’ve joined the Real Nappies for London voucher scheme to help residents buy reusable nappies.

We’re offering a limited supply of £50 vouchers to residents who wish to purchase reusable nappies.

Attend an event

If you want to apply, we highly recommend attending one of our scheduled events.

The next event is taking place on Monday 12 February at 10.30am to 12.30pm - Tolworth Children's Centre, School Lane, Tolworth, KT6 7QJ.

Let us know if you’re coming by booking your free ticket, or you can also turn up on the day. These events will provide essential guidance and advice for getting started with reusable nappies and help you choose the right ones for your baby.

At the event, you will have the opportunity to:

  • speak with our project partner to learn more about reusable nappies, ask questions, and understand the Real Nappies for London scheme
  • purchase reusable nappies and explore different brands through a reusable nappy retailer pop-up shop
  • exchange your unwanted baby clothes for other baby clothes, free of charge, at our ‘give and take’ stall
  • connect with a local nappy library to register your interest in renting reusable nappies
  • connect with other like-minded Kingston residents who are also interested in sustainable options for their families

Who can apply

To qualify for a £50 reusable nappy voucher, you will need to provide Real Nappies for London with photocopies of the following supporting evidence:

  • proof of identity like your driver’s licence, passport or birth certificate
  • proof of address like a recent Council Tax bill, utility bill or bank statement (not driver’s licence)
  • proof of pregnancy and birth - an official document showing your name and the child’s expected date of delivery or date of birth (like MatB1 form, Baby’s Birth Certificate, Hospital Scan Report letter, or NHS Prescription Charge Card)
  • for multiple births, provide the hospital scan report and you’ll receive one voucher per baby

You can also apply in person at the scheduled events. Remember to bring your supporting evidence with you on the day.

Nappy Libraries

Local nappy libraries let you borrow and test various types and brands of reusable nappies before making a purchase.

These libraries offer a range of options and guidance to support you and your baby throughout your reusable nappy journey. They usually charge a small weekly fee.

Kingston residents can use these nappy libraries in local boroughs:

Nappy Laundry Services

Nappy laundries offer a weekly service where you can rent nappies and have them professionally washed and delivered to your doorstep, saving you time and effort. Contact Number One for Nappies for more information.
