Apply for a Lawful Development Certificate

If you think that your building works can be done under permitted development, you can apply for a Lawful Development Certificate (LDC).

This isn’t the same as planning permission, but it is proof that your building work is lawful.

Lawful development certificates are not compulsory. Before you apply, you should check to see if you need planning permission.

What you'll need

You’ll need to submit:

  • supporting plans and drawings in PDF, JPG or PNG format
  • a credit or debit card to pay any planning fees

Your application will be judged purely against legislation, and it doesn’t require your neighbours to be notified.

How to apply

You can apply for a lawful development certificate using the Planning Portal.
