Introduction to the course

The role of the community interpreter is becoming increasingly important, particularly in regions with many linguistic communities. The interpreter acts as a bridge between communities and enables people to access services and situations which would otherwise not be possible.

This qualification enables learners who are speakers of other languages to develop the language and skills necessary to go on and train as community interpreters at Level 3 and higher levels.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to go about getting voluntary bilingual work and how to gain experience prior to undertaking higher level study in Community Interpreting

You will will look more closely at some of the aspects of language and other skills which you will need in order to be successful on community interpreting roles.

You will develop personal skills such as assertiveness and listening skills which will support your future study and work as community interpreters.

There will be an opportunity to further develop awareness and knowledge about public services in the UK

Upon completion of the course you will gain a fully accredited Level 2 Certificate in Preparing for the Community Interpreting Role qualification

What are the entry requirements?

You will need a good level of written and spoken English language and at least one other language spoken at a fluent level

You must also be able to commit to fully attending for the whole course. This course consists of two three-hour lessons per week. There will be additional homework and self-study assignments outside of class time.

What do I need to bring with me to class?

Pen and paper. This is a hybrid course with some sessions delivered online so you will need access to a computer, laptop or tablet and an internet connection. If you do not have the necessary IT equipment you can still apply for the course as there may be opportunity for equipment loan, depending on personal circumstances

Progression to Ascentis Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting
