Your Mayor and Deputy Mayor
Our Mayor is the figurehead of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. The Mayor is elected at the Annual Council Meeting in May and serves for one year. The Mayor (and Deputy Mayor) are members of the Council.
The Mayor’s duties include representing the Council on public occasions, such as Remembrance Day services and chairing meetings of the Council. The Mayor also attends civic functions including citizenship ceremonies.
The current Mayor is Councillor Yogan Yoganathan MBE
Councillor Yogan Yoganathan is the 187th mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. He and his family have lived in Kingston for over 52 years, and he has previously served as the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston from 2005/06.
As a councillor he has served as chair and co-chair of the Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee. He was made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in the Queen’s 2009 New Year’s Honours for his work in community relations and services to local government. Councillor Yoganathan has always believed he has a duty, and as Mayor a special responsibility, to serve the whole community and to help support, encourage and empower people.
With this in mind the Mayor’s Charitable Trust is proud to be supporting two local causes, Creative Youth and The Community Brain for this Mayoral year.
Councillor Yoganathan said:
"As a long standing councillor for the last 20 years and more, I know how important the work of the voluntary and not for profit sector is to the quality of life and opportunities for our residents. Indeed, through my volunteering as Chair and Vice-Chair of the Kingston Racial Equality Council and as one of the founders of the Kingston Institute for Tamil Culture I have seen the difference organisations can make. This alongside my work with Surbiton Rotary, Surbiton Festival, Surbiton Business Community and Surbiton Farmers Market etc has helped me to choose two organisations that help make our Royal Borough special for the period 2002/23."
