Statement on fire at King George V Field

Read our statement on the fire at King George V Field and what is happening at the site.

Update 5 September 2025

Following the fire at King George’s Field on 8 July, the site was attended by police and Council officers. The site was secured and full surveys were completed by a structural engineer and specialist asbestos contractor.

Since then, the site has been secured with hoarding and remote-monitored CCTV. A full Refurbishment and Demolition (R&D) survey has been carried out, along with an air reassurance monitoring test, as well as a site visit from a demolition contractor.

Works to demolish the existing building are due to commence on Monday 8 September. The estimated programme for the works is four weeks.

Works will include safe removal and disposal of any asbestos containing materials, followed by full removal of the existing pavilion structure and foundations, and levelling of the ground.

Access to the site has been arranged via the carpark off of Jubilee Way.

The existing hoardings will remain in place and the site will be secured and remote-monitored by CCTV.

Update 10 July 2025

The council has been supporting the Met Police with their investigations into the cause of the fire and provided a structural engineer to ensure safe access to the building.

Due to the potential risk of asbestos in the building, a wider cordon has been put in place around the site to encompass debris from the fire to ensure public safety. Samples of the debris were taken to test.

The samples of debris tested positive for traces of asbestos. The asbestos is in an open space and therefore poses a limited risk and the public should not be concerned. The widened cordon remains in place for their safety.

Specialist cleaning will commence on Friday 11 July to remove all traces of the asbestos.

The site will then be secured with hoardings whilst the council arranges for the remains of the building to be demolished.

Update 9 July 2025

The fire is now extinguished. The emergency services are still on site and a police investigation is underway.

All roads are open and traffic has returned to normal.

8 July 2025

London Fire Brigade is attending a fire at King George V Field, Tolworth. The incident is reportedly at the pavilion or an abandoned building on the site.

There has been heavy traffic on the surrounding roads and we understand Jubilee Way has been closed while the fire brigade deal with the fire.

The council is monitoring the situation. Once we have more information about the exact location of the fire and the extent of the damage, we will share a further update.
