Statement on DBS Identity Verification Process

Read our statement on DBS Identity Verification Process.

We understand that members of the public may have questions about how Kingston Council carries out identity checks via the government Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), including services we provide on behalf of our schools and other organisations. In particular, we understand there may be queries relating to more complex cases where a name change or other personal details have been updated.

As a local authority, we take these responsibilities seriously — particularly in relation to safeguarding, data protection, and ensuring fair and respectful access to employment. We are committed to treating all individuals with dignity, and to applying our procedures lawfully, consistently, and appropriately.

Following recent feedback, we reviewed our DBS identity verification processes and have introduced a number of improvements — including clearer guidance for staff, enhanced training, and strengthened oversight. These changes are part of our ongoing commitment to service improvement and are designed to support a high-quality experience for everyone, regardless of background.

We remain committed to inclusion, transparency, and learning — and to supporting our partner organisations by delivering services that reflect best practice and build trust.
