Restrictions on child employment

There are restrictions on the kind of work that children can do and the hours that they can work. You should read the child employment restrictions on GOV.UK.

We also have our own local bylaws that say the kinds of work a child can do. 13 year olds can do only do 'light' work and only in:

  • agricultural or horticultural work
  • delivery of newspapers or printed materials
  • shop work
  • hairdressing salons
  • office work
  • private car washing by hand
  • café or restaurant work (but not in the kitchen)
  • domestic work, like in a hotel

Children of 14 and over can do 'light' work in any area, except:

  • cinemas or night clubs
  • commercial kitchens
  • collecting or sorting rubbish, rags or scrap metal
  • any work more than three metres above the ground or floor level
  • telephone sales
  • fairgrounds or amusement arcades, as an attendant or assistant
