Sustainable September. Improve your home, cut your bills and help the planet.
Sustainable September text introduction

We know that around half of the climate changing emissions generated in Kingston come from heating and powering the borough's homes and buildings, many of which weren't built with modern energy efficiency standards in mind.

This, combined with expensive energy bills, is costly for the planet and people's bank balances.

We've collated a variety of information and resources that can help you to improve your home, cut your energy bills and help the planet at the same time. Explore this page to get started.

Emissions in Kingston

Find out how we're working to help lower emissions

Working toward a greener Kingston for current and future generations is one of our key priorities.

Which is why we’re taking steps to cut our own emissions while helping the wider borough do the same, in part, through campaigns like Sustainable September.

Between declaring a Climate Emergency in 2019 and 2023 (the most recent year data is available for), borough wide emissions of carbon dioxide dropped by 17%.

Over half of the remaining emissions come from heating and powering the borough’s homes and buildings.

Since our baseline year of 2017/18, and comparing like with like, we have seen a 37% reduction in the council’s own operational emissions. Of these remaining emissions, 75% come from the electricity and gas the council uses while delivering essential services to residents.

These council operational emissions account for around 1% of all emissions generated in the borough.

Some of the steps we’re taking to reduce the council’s own energy related emissions, include:

  • Replacing the borough’s ageing street lighting with modern, LED equivalents which will save over 11,000 tonnes of emissions over their lifetime along with a £750,000 saving.
  • Introduced a programme for assessing and replacing ageing boilers in council properties.
  • Securing external funding to help us start work to improve the energy efficiency of council homes and buildings like libraries.
  • Installed heat pumps and solar panels at a hostel and sheltered accommodation site.
  • Swapping the waste collection fleet and other vehicles the council owns or rents to electric or hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fueled options.

Find out more about how we are helping to tackle climate change and prepare the borough for its impacts by visiting our Climate and Sustainability webpages.

Fountain Court heat pumps

Residents at Fountain Court in New Malden are enjoying the benefits of a new clean, green heating system to keep them warm and cosy.

Three large heat pumps now provide the heating and hot water via a small district heat network and 56 solar panels now provide valuable power in daylight hours.
