Day nurseries, pre-school playgroups, registered childminders and independent schools

Day nurseries provide full or part-time childcare for children aged up to five years, all year round. Some nurseries provide out of school care for older children.

Preschool or playgroups provide part-time childcare for children aged two years up to five years, this may be term time only.

Childminders register with either Ofsted or an Ofsted registered Childminder Agency to provide full or part-time care for children aged up to eight years in a home setting. Some childminders provide childcare for older children over the age of eight years during school holiday or as after school care for siblings.

Independent fee paying or 'private' preparatory schools may take children from nursery years to sixth form.

More information about different types of early education and childcare providers is held on the Achieving for Children AfCinfo website.

You can search for local early education and childcare settings on the Childcare Search also on the AfCinfo website.
