Learn more about this group of professionals from education and the music industry who meet to collaborate, foster musical growth and encourage musical opportunities for young people in Kingston.

Vision

The Kingston Music Network aims to be a proactive, collaborative body dedicated to fostering musical growth and inspiration among young people in Kingston. Its core purpose is to:

  • Grow and Inspire Music Making: Actively promote and develop musical opportunities for children and young people across the borough.
  • Facilitate Action: Move beyond discussion to implement concrete projects and initiatives.
  • Foster Collaboration: Connect individuals and organisations with shared passions and diverse skill sets to work in partnership.
  • Amplify Impact: Enhance the reach and effectiveness of existing and new music initiatives.

Structure

The Kingston Music Network will operate with a flexible, project-based structure designed to maximise impact and engagement:

  • Network Meetings: The whole Network will meet in July and December to feedback progress and decide on annual focus topics.
  • Sub-Groups: The network will be divided into three sub-groups. Each sub-group will focus on a specific topic decided by the Network.

Membership

The Kingston Music Network will comprise:

  • Core Members: Individuals from education, music and wider arts organisations who are committed to the network's aims and action-oriented objectives.
  • Invited Experts: Experts will be proactively invited to join specific sub-groups, bringing specialised knowledge and skills to address particular topics.
  • Community Engagement: The network will actively seek to involve parents and other untapped community resources who are passionate about supporting music in schools, recognising the time and financial constraints faced by music leads.

Topics for 2025 to 2026

The network will initially focus its efforts around three critical themes, which will guide the work of its sub-groups. These themes will be decided by the Network at its July meeting each year. In 2025/26, the Network has decided to focus on the following topics:

  • Inclusivity: Ensuring music education and participation are accessible to all young people, including those in SEND and mainstream schools, and exploring untapped community resources.
  • Ensembles: Developing and promoting opportunities for young people to participate in musical ensembles of all genres and for all abilities, especially those run by KMS. Looking at routes into ensembles, promotion by tutors and schools and analysis of pupil groups who prefer not to join ensembles.
  • Roots into Industry: Creating pathways and connections for young musicians to explore careers and opportunities within the music industry.
