Understanding Mental Health Level 3 Certificate

You will focus on the study of mental health and mental well-being to support different occupational areas, offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge and understanding.
The objectives of this qualification will help you to understand: mental health legislation, services and public attitudes and how these have evolved; how to support mental well-being through various stages of life; mental ill health, treatment options available and the potential consequences of mental ill health the skills required to work in a mental health service.
This qualification is designed to increase your knowledge and understanding of mental health and mental well-being. It will also support you to progress into employment within the health and social care sector.
You will cover a range of topics including:
You will produce a portfolio of work over the duration of the course in order to achieve the qualification.
Please note that themes of a sensitive nature may be discussed throughout this course.
You must be aged 19 or over (as at 31st August 2025) and be ordinarily resident in the UK.
You will need a sufficient level of English to be able to follow the curriculum and complete any course work.
Please also be sure you have enough time each week to attend all classes and to complete any homework assignments outside of class.
As this is an online course, you will need some basic digital skills in order to access the online lessons. We currently use Google Classroom to deliver the lessons.
Please bring a pen, note paper or note book, and a folder to store any handouts.
This course has some elements delivered online, so you will need access to a computer or laptop and an internet connection. (Please note that a smartphone or tablet will not be suitable)
If you do not have the necessary IT equipment, you can still apply for the course as there may be opportunity for equipment loan depending on your personal circumstances.
Once you have achieved this qualification you could progress to:
- Level 3 Award in Awareness of the Mental Capacity Act 2005
- Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care
- Level 3 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care
Successful completion of the course opens up routes into various job roles including:

This course is part of the Free Courses for Jobs offer. It may be free if you are unemployed, if you are a London resident earning below £27,007.50, or if you live in a non-devolved area earning below £25,750 - please see our fee policy for further information
