This course is ideal for those who would like to build a career in working as a Teaching Assistant or Learning Support Assistant in a school (or other education provider).
This course is also suitable for those already working as a teaching assistant, but who would like to gain a recognised qualification.
This course may also appeal to parents who plan to home school their children or to anyone interested in the teaching and learning process
The course covers all the knowledge and skills you will need to work as a teaching assistant. You will cover a range of topics including:
- the importance of safeguarding and safeguarding processes
- supporting English and maths in school settings
- positive behaviour management
- health and safety at school
- effective communication with children and peers
- development of your career and career pathways
- supporting play in school settings
- supporting special educational needs and supporting children who speak English as an additional language
and other key topics
You must be aged 19 or over (as at 31st August 2025) and be ordinarily resident in the UK.
You will need a strong level of English to be able to follow the curriculum and complete any course work.
You will need to be working, volunteering, or on practical placement at a school setting alongside studying on this course.
Please also be sure you have enough time each week to attend all classes and to complete any homework assignments outside of class.
You must have a qualification in Maths and English at Level 2 such as Functional Skills or a GCSE Maths and English (C/4 or above). If you do not hold these qualifications, please contact us as we provide these courses.
Please bring a pen, note paper or note book, and a folder to store any handouts.
This course has some elements delivered online, so you will need access to a computer or laptop and an internet connection. (Please note that a smartphone or tablet will not be suitable)
If you do not have the necessary IT equipment, you can still apply for the course as there may be opportunity for equipment loan depending on your personal circumstances.
You could progress on to a teaching qualification course such as our Education and Training Level 3 Award course if you wish to move into teaching. You could also take our Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement Level 3 Award to develop your understanding of assessment.
You can work as a Teaching Assistant / Learning Support Assistant in a school or other education setting.
