Typhoon Haiyan tragedy

Mayor of Kingston’s message to the Kingston Filipino British Community.

The shocking reports and scenes of terrible devastation and loss of life in the Philippines has been met by a rapid international response and relief operation to help the survivors, especially vulnerable children and women.

My thoughts especially are with the many Filipino people living in the borough, who will be worried about friends and family in the areas affected.

Earlier this year I had the honour of meeting the Kingston Filipino British Community which works to unite our growing and vibrant local Filipino population, helping people to integrate and feel part of their new home here.

Kingston’s Filipino community has flourished over recent years, particularly with the arrival of many nurses from the Philippines to work in our health service.

I am using this open letter to you to remind people that they can donate to the relief efforts through the Disasters Emergency Committee - 0370 60 60 900 or www.dec.org.uk.

Be assured that our thoughts are with the Filiipno community at this difficult time. We are one Kingston.
