Kingston welcomes new Mayor Councillor Thay Thayalan

That Thayalan

Councillor Thay Thayalan was elected and appointed as the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames at Annual Council (22 May).

The chains of office were ceremonially passed from the outgoing Mayor, Mrs Julie Pickering, to the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames’ 183rd Mayor.

Having lived in the borough for forty two years, Councillor Thayalan was first elected as a Liberal Democrat councillor in 2014 and again in 2018 for Tolworth and Hook Rise ward.  He was formally nominated for the role of Mayor by the Leader of the Council, Councillor Liz Green.

Councillor Thayalan has appointed his wife Lata Thayalan as his Mayoress. The new Deputy Mayor will be Councillor Olivia Boult and her escort will be Jamie Wallace.

Speaking as Kingston’s new Mayor, Councillor Thay Thayalan said:

“I am proud and humbled to have been chosen by the Council as the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. Thanks to the Leader of the Council, Councillor Liz Green, for the nomination and introduction, and to Councillor Lorraine Dunstone for her support and kind words.

“I would also like to thank my predecessor Julie Pickering who has been a wonderful Mayor and congratulate her on the fantastic achievements. She worked tirelessly throughout the year and was an outstanding representative for our borough. She will be a hard act to follow.

“I look forward to getting out into the Kingston community, meeting local people, organisations, attending as many events as possible, promoting and celebrating the fantastic history, heritage and diverse cultures of our borough. I endeavour as Mayor to work for the benefit of all the people and to promote the borough as a place to visit, live and work.”

Other announcements at Annual Council included the re-establishment of a Scrutiny Panel, and appointments of new portfolio holders and committee chairs.
