Kingston History Centre receives national accreditation

Kingston History Centre has been accredited by The National Archives for its management of its unique collections and the service it offers to visitors.

Achieving 'Accredited Archive Service' status is a huge achievement and shows the centre has met nationally set standards relating to the management, resourcing and care of its collections.

Joanne Moulton, Acting Head of Culture at Kingston Council, said:

“We are very proud of this achievement. In recent years we have developed how Kingston History Centre is run, and the accreditation reflects the hard work of staff and volunteers to ensure that we continue to improve what is a brilliant archive and local history centre.

“We are always looking to improve the service offered by the centre and are keen to ensure that the material we collect documents Kingston’s rich history and is representative of the communities living and working in the borough today.”

Formerly housed at the North Kingston Centre in Richmond Road, Kingston History Centre opened at its current premises in the Grade II listed former Magistrates Court in Kingston Guildhall in October 2015. The centre cares for, interprets and promotes the borough’s documentary heritage in order to inspire a sense of pride and a greater understanding of the royal borough’s rich and diverse history.

At the heart of its collection is a wealth of archival material from and relating to the borough dating back to 1208, including a collection of royal charters and administrative records spanning centuries, as well as records produced by a multitude of local institutions, businesses, societies and individuals connected with the borough. There are also local history reference sources such as books, pamphlets, maps, directories, photographs and newspapers. Together these offer a unique resource both for experienced researchers and those with a more general interest in the borough's history.

The centre is open to the public from 10am to 5pm Wednesday to Saturday with late opening until 7pm on Thursdays.
