South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust are delighted to announce that the detailed plans for the new Tolworth Hospital have formally been approved by Kingston Council. This paves the way for building work to commence in late 2018 and for the brand new hospital to be fully operational by 2021.

The innovative plans will deliver one of the country’s most modern centres of excellence for mental health care at the Tolworth site. The new designs, by award winning architects CF Moller, will revolutionise the way care will be delivered for residents across Kingston and South West London.

Chief Executive David Bradley said: ‘Our new Tolworth Hospital will be unique as clinicians and patients have been at the forefront of developing the design approach. The new hospital promises to be amongst the best possible facilities in the country and will ensure we can deliver the highest level of care to the thousands of patients we care for now and for generations to come.’

Many current mental health facilities in south west London are not fit for purpose and have a monotonous environment with the same fixture, materials and fittings. The new Tolworth Hospital will break the mould, with the design directly informed by clinicians. The patient centred approach ensures that the new facilities offer patients privacy and dignity during treatment whilst also adding benefits such as access to gardens, light, and more private and communal areas.

Whilst also delivering first class mental health facilities the new hospital will also ensure the Trust and borough are at the forefront of pioneering mental health research and will bring more healthcare and construction jobs to the borough over the coming years.

Cllr Cathy Roberts, Kingston Council’s portfolio holder for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “We are pleased to have given the green light to such an important development in the borough and welcome the plans set out for the Tolworth Hospital site. The new hospital will provide the much needed mental health services for Kingston and our neighbouring boroughs and promises to offer some of the best treatment and facilities in the country.”
