Let’s Go Cycle for bike week

Cyclists

Kingston Council is encouraging local residents to get involved in cycling events taking place across the borough as part of Bike Week 2017 (10 to 18 June).

Each year Bike Week encourages over half a million people across the UK to join in events and rethink their everyday travel journeys by choosing more sustainable options like cycling.

The theme this year, 'everyday cycling for everyone', is aimed at showing how cycling can easily be part of everyday life.

Deputy leader and portfolio holder for the Go Cycle programme Councillor Terry Paton said:

”Making cycling and walking part of our everyday life is exactly what our Go Cycle investment in Kingston is seeking to do.

“Our schemes are aimed at relieving the pressure of a growing population on the borough’s transport network by providing new facilities for cycling and walking, while improving road safety and public spaces.

“We’re also encouraging local residents to look at more active travel choices by changing the way they travel around Kingston by the provision of better cycling and walking routes across the borough.”

Member Officer Board Councillor Hilary Gander said:

“By demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling, Bike Week aims to get people to give cycling a go, whether for fun, as a means of getting around to work or school, the local shops or just to visit friends. I hope people who are avid cyclists and those new to cycling will get on their bikes and come along to our Bike Week events ”

The Go Cycle team will be holding a series of events throughout Bike Week, including:

  • Dr Bike events (where you can get free bike maintenance checks to ensure your bike is roadworthy).
  • A bike breakfast

  • Public bike ride

  • Giveaways at local events (slap bands, cycle maps, puncture repair kits, cycle skills leaflets).
