Mayor of London supports decision to approve £70m Lidl HQ in Tolworth

Kingston Council has been given the green light by the Greater London Authority to progress the development of Lidl’s new £70 million London headquarters in Tolworth.

The regeneration of the former Hook Venturer Sports Club site will bring with it a further £5m in infrastructure improvements for the local area, including the nearby A3 roundabout. 

Councillor Kevin Davis, Leader of Kingston Council, said: 

“This is excellent news for Tolworth and the borough. The scheme brings with it huge opportunities for local jobs for local people - the new office space could see Lidl’s head office workforce grow from 450 to 750 and 5 percent of the new roles being reserved for trainees or apprentices.

“As the population of Kingston grows, we need to ensure that there’s infrastructure to support it, including jobs, more homes and good transport links. Securing a multi-million investment in a state of the art, sustainable building as well as the surrounding area is the best result for our residents, our economy and our Royal Borough.” 

As part of the negotiations with the council, the retailer has also committed to providing opportunities for local suppliers within its growing supply chain, which is set to grow by 250 new stores across London alone.  

Ingo Fischer, Lidl UK Board Director for Expansion and Development, said: 

"We are greatly encouraged by the Mayor of London's response to our proposed HQ development in Tolworth and will continue to work closely with Kingston Council to finalise plans."

Members of Kingston Council’s Development Control Committee voted unanimously to grant planning permission to the food retailer in December 2016. The scheme was then referred to the Greater London Authority, the Mayor of London’s office, for conclusion.

Following the move by the Greater London Authority, the council will now look to finalise the Section 106 levy, which is the financial contribution made by the developer for community benefit. Once in place, the council will be able to issue the decision notice, granting planning permission for the multi-million pound building.
