Communities across the Royal Borough of Kingston have come together to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, on 8 May 2025.

The Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Liz Green, was joined by a small civic party on the steps of the Guildhall, including Representative Deputy Lieutenant Father Martin Hislop DL, Leader of Kingston Council Andreas Kirsch, and the leaders of the opposition parties, as the VE Day 80 flag was raised. During the gathering to remember the bravery and sacrifices of those who fought for freedom, the Town Crier read the official VE Day proclamation

Kingston Council’s Armed Forces Champions, Councillor Noel Hadjimichael and Councillor Ian George, also attended the proclamation gathering to show their respect and support.

Councillor Hadjimichael stressed the importance of the commemorative celebrations:

“80 years ago the long anticipated news about the end of the war in Europe resulted in spontaneous celebrations breaking out across the nation. Shortly after, a national holiday was declared and people from all walks of life came together to mark this moment.

“Today, we continue these celebrations and commemorate the sacrifice and valour of the people who fought, worked and endured for the freedom and peace we have had the privilege to enjoy since then.

“We also want to also take this opportunity to highlight the importance of the sacrifices made by current members of the armed forces community. Through Kingston’s Armed Forces Covenant, Kingston Council is committed to ensuring that the armed forces community is supported, respected and celebrated.”

Councillor George further highlighted significance of the celebrations:

“I have huge respect for those serving and former members of the armed forces, their sacrifices are invaluable and they deserve the highest praise. This year’s anniversary is very special, marking 80 years of a lasting peace and freedom.

“I am proud to be a representative on the Kingston Council Armed Forces Covenant working group, that seeks to ensure that members of the armed forces are treated fairly and supported when needed.”

Around the borough residents marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day with street parties and get-togethers. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor visited a number of events, including the Royal British Legion stall in New Malden High Street on Saturday 3 May, and street parties at Vine Close in Surbiton on Sunday 4 May, Alexandra Drive, Avenue Road, and The Byways on Monday 5 May, and a garden party at Lynton Hall Nursing Home on Wednesday 7 May. The Mayor will also be attending further events on Thursday 8 May including a VE Day 80 Anniversary Celebration at the Royal Star & Garter Home, Surbiton and laying a wreath at Kingston’s War Memorial with the Royal British Legion
