Bowie and Beyond : Ziggy Stardust & Kingston's Music Heritage exhibition captures Kingston's music, fashion and arts scene at the time of Ziggy in the 70's and its legacy.

A brand new exhibition celebrating the iconic life and music of David Bowie and the significant contribution the superstar has made to Kingston’s music heritage has opened at Kingston Museum.

Starting with the pivotal moment in David Bowie’s career when he launched his Ziggy Stardust persona at Tolworth’s Toby Jug in February 1972, the exhibition explores how he later returned for a gig at Kingston Polytechnic (now Kingston University) in May 1972. In his Ziggy persona, Bowie perfectly encapsulated the shifting trends of Kingston’s art, music and pop fashion scene at this time.

The exhibition is a story told through music and memorabilia sourced from local people, with original artworks from, and interviews with, those who were inspired by Bowie and have influenced national and international music and arts trends since.

Kingston Council’s Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Governance Cllr Peter Herlinger said:

“This wonderful exhibition has been staged through a partnership between local charities Creative Youth and The Community Brain with Kingston Museum. The free exhibition highlights Kingston Council’s commitment to celebrating the borough’s heritage and working together with our charity and community organisations for the benefit of the borough.”
