Kingston to switch on the lights to celebrate Diwali
In a first, the lights in Market Place, New Malden High Street and Surbiton Town Centre will be switched on to celebrate Diwali this year the Council has announced.
Guildhall, the Hook Centre and All Saint’s Church will also be floodlit as part of the this important Hindu festival.
The Mayor and Mayoresses are inviting residents to join them at 4.30pm on Thursday 5 November in Kingston Town Centre to watch the lights come on and enjoy some festive time together.
Councillor Roy Arora, Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, said:
“I’m thrilled that, for the first time in the history of our borough, town centres and some of our municipal buildings will be lit up in celebration of Diwali.
“As a multi-cultural, multi faith community, I feel this is an important step in making all of our residents feel welcome and at home.
“I would urge residents to come along and join us in the Market Place for this festival of light, joy and peace.”
During the evening of Thursday 5 November there will be a mini food market, music, dance and henna stalls for residents to enjoy.
The event is supported by Kingston Council, Kingston First, the Sarvoday Association, Surbiton Business Community and the Rotary Club.
