Leader of Kingston Council Andreas Kirsch has issued a statement following the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

“On behalf of everyone in the borough I want to express our deep sorrow at the loss of life and destruction caused by the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

“The tragedy has shocked and saddened people around the world and I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to all those affected, including those from our own Turkish and Syrian communities.

“Kingston is a diverse, multicultural community and we place great value on the richness people from all over the world bring to life in our borough. We are extremely proud to have welcomed a number of families from Syria to the borough through the Syrian refugee resettlement scheme.

“Our communities are already coming together to support each other, as well as to offer support to the relief effort. Local businesses such as Kingston-based Cappadocia Restaurant are raising money for organisations in Turkey who are providing aid and relief to the affected areas.

“We stand with all those affected, including those in our own borough concerned for friends and relatives caught up in the disaster.”

Anyone concerned about relatives or friends should call the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in London on 020 7008 5000.

Donations can be sent to the British Red Cross and the Turkish Red Crescent.
