Kingston's Director of Public Health thanks residents for their efforts to drive down COVID-19 infections

Director of Public Health Iona Lidington has praised the actions of people across the borough, pulling together to reverse rising coronavirus rates, and urges us to keep following the rules.

"Two weeks ago Kingston had one of the highest rates of coronavirus infections in London. Now we are seeing rates fall relatively quickly, and that is no accident. All of you across our borough have played your part in helping reverse that trend by following the guidance - and I want to say a huge thank you for all you have done.

"In recent days there have been some encouraging developments - the real prospect of a vaccine on the horizon, although still in its early stages, and the news that the roll out of rapid testing for some priority groups will start soon. While these are certainly very positive signs, we must not become complacent. We must keep on doing all we can to drive down infection rates, so that we are in the very best position to benefit from these new developments as they become available.

"We all still have a vital role to play to protect ourselves and our friends and families. Following the simple but effective advice about regular hand washing, wearing face coverings and making space really works. In addition, if you have any symptoms, please self isolate at home and book a free NHS test at nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119. There is plenty of capacity at our local testing sites, particularly at the weekends, so you will be able to get a test easily. If you are contacted by NHS test and trace, or by Kingston Council’s new local contact tracing team, please follow the rules they will explain to you about self isolation. By following this guidance we can all help break the chains of transmission and stop the spread of the virus.

"I know you have all made huge sacrifices so far,  and by continuing to play your part you are giving us all the very best chance of returning to a more normal life as soon as we can. Thank you for all you are doing to help Keep Kingston Safe."
