Kingston Council to introduce three temporary school streets to aid social distancing as schools return

Kingston Council will be introducing three new ‘school streets’ to help make public spaces safer and aid social distancing as the phased reopening of primary schools begins next week.

On Monday 1 June school streets will be in operation for St Paul’s Primary School on Alexandra Road and Alexandra Primary School on Princes Road, in North Kingston, and from Tuesday 2 June for Castle Hill Primary School on Buckland Road in Chessington.

School streets close the roads outside schools to motor traffic during drop-off and pick-up times, creating a pedestrian and cycle only zone. The additional space will enable social distancing while waiting, walking, cycling and scooting, as well as reducing road danger and improving air quality.

The scheme encourages active travel, helping keep the roads clear for those who have to drive at this time. For those parents who have no alternative but to drive some of the way, we encourage you to park away from the school and “stride” the rest of the journey.

We have been trialling a school street for Lovelace Primary School in Mansfield Road, Chessington since October 2019 and have already seen positive improvements in the local neighbourhood, with an increase in sustainable travel to and from school, reduction of poor parking and improvement in air quality.

Signage will be put in place this weekend to inform drivers and the local community. Blue badge holders and local residents will be exempt from the restrictions.

Alexandra Primary School - Princes Road, North Kingston

  • Times of operation: 8:15-9:30 am and 2:30-3:30 pm
  • Diversion: Park Road, Tudor Road and Queens Road (same as above).

Castle Hill Primary School - Buckland Road, Chessington

These school streets are being delivered on a temporary basis, however where successful and subject to full consultation with residents and schools they may be made permanent in some form.

During COVID-19, we remain fully committed to our sustainable travel agenda and are urgently looking at more ways to adapt our programme of cycle and pedestrian improvements to maximise streetspace and enable social distancing.

If you would like your children’s school to benefit from a ‘school street’ please get in touch with the Sustainable Transport Team at: [email protected]. We also welcome other suggestions for temporary streetspace for walking and cycling.
