Riverside memorial benches relocation

Riverside memorial bench relocation

As part of the Go Cycle Programme, construction work on the Portsmouth Road development included revitalising the Queens Promenade with new landscaping and terracing.

The work involved up to 36 memorial benches and 39 plaques being relocated. The council worked tirelessly to track down the friends and relatives of those that are remembered there.

We were honoured that many families attended the official opening of the new area in April 2017 to view the new benches and landscaping that we've created for relatives to sit, reflect and honour the memory of their loved one.

Lily McGeorge, wife of Ernie McGeorge, said she was pleased with the new bench for her husband. Lily, who attended the open day with her daughter Jenny Andrews, said her late husband was diagnosed with emphysema when he was 43.

" I used to push him in his wheelchair along the promenade. I often meet-up here with his ex-work colleagues, or by myself and just sit and reflect. It's a wonderful spot and I'm really pleased with the improvement works by the council," Lily said.

Su Singh and her mother Pat from Chessington also attended the official opening of the Queen's Promenade bench area and landscaping. The pair bought a bunch of sunflowers to leave on the new bench honouring their father and husband Narindar (Harry) Singh.

Su said: "When dad passed away we put his ashes in the River Ganges and as a family we felt we wanted something to honour dad that was by the river, because we like the idea that all rivers flow into one. This bench by the riverside is such a nice memorial for him. We can sit here and have good memories."
