COVID-19 guidance on park use

Updated 2 July 2020

Kingston’s parks and green spaces are crucial for exercise and wellbeing, but to ensure they stay open for everyone to use, it is vital that you follow the Government’s guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Based on the latest Government advice you can now:

  • Spend time outdoors, including parks, private gardens and other outdoor spaces, in groups of up to six people from different households, following social distancing guidelines.

  • Exercise as often as you wish - following social distancing guidelines.

  • Take part in other outdoor sports and activities, in groups of up to six people provided you adhere to strict social distancing guidelines.

  • Personal trainers can now work with clients outdoors, in groups of up to six people following social distancing guidelines and enforcing strong hygiene measures including cleaning equipment rigorously. You must apply for a license to conduct your sessions in one of our open spaces, please email [email protected] for further information and to request a full application.

  • People who play team sports can meet to train together and do things like conditioning or fitness sessions but they must be in separate groups of no more than six and must be 2 metres apart at all times.

If you are planning to visit one of Kingston’s open spaces it is vital that you take the following steps:

  • Do not visit a park if you have any symptoms - high temperature, new continuous cough, loss or change to your sense of smell or taste. See NHS guidelines if this applies to you.

  • If you have a garden, please make use of the space for exercise and fresh air.

  • If the park is crowded do not enter if you cannot safely observe social distancing.

  • Be aware of people entering/exiting the park at the same time as you. Be patient and allow space.

  • Observe social distancing - stay at least 2 metres apart from other people at all times.

  • Keep to the left of footpaths where possible to help the flow of traffic.

  • Respect other park users and make use of all areas of the park that remain open so everyone can enjoy the space and stay safe.

  • Follow guidance about facilities which are closed for safety reasons.

  • Most of our toilets in parks are reopening on Monday 6 July please visit our toilet facilities page for information or visit www.toiletmap.org.uk to find the nearest public toilet.

  • If you are visiting one of the tennis courts at Alexandra Recreation Ground, Beverley Park or Kingston Road Recreation Ground, you must follow strict social distancing guidelines at all times. Read more.

  • Follow hygiene advice when you are outside. Avoid touching surfaces (such as gates, benches or hand-rails) and your mouth and face. Please follow Public Health England advice on hygiene and wash your hands as soon as you get home.

  • Do not have barbecues.

  • Do not gather in groups of more than six.

  • Please keep your dogs under strict control, and on a lead if necessary, to ensure you can safely keep 2 metres away from others.

  • Help keep the parks clean by taking your litter home with you.

Playgrounds

Play areas in our parks and open spaces will reopen on Saturday 4 July. Please note we are currently renovating the playgrounds in King Edwards Rec and Churchfields Rec so these will remain closed. Read more.

  • Do not visit a playground if you or your family display any symptoms.
  • There are currently no special cleaning measures in place in playgrounds - they are not disinfected or sanitised.
  • Please make sure you all wash your hands before you leave home to visit the playground, and when you return from your visit.
  • Please bring hand sanitiser with you and make sure you and your family use it before and after using the equipment - this will help to keep you and others safe.
  • To help maintain safe social distancing if practical only one adult per group should supervise children.
  • If the playground is busy when you arrive please consider waiting before entering, or return at another time - please consider discussing this possibility with your child before arriving.
  • Avoid congregating with other people when entering or leaving the playground, and when supervising children.
  • Some items of equipment can only be used by one child at a time while social distancing - please wait at a safe distance if equipment is in use or return later to use it.
  • Encourage your children to avoid touching their faces whilst they are playing.
  • Please refrain from having picnics into the playground - the wider park area will provide more space for this.

Outdoor gyms

  • Do not use the equipment if you or your family display any symptoms.
  • There are currently no special cleaning measures in place for outdoor gyms - equipment is not disinfected or sanitised.
  • Please bring hand sanitiser with you and use it before and after using the equipment and wipe down touch points before and after use.
  • If the area is busy or the equipment is in use please wait a safe distance until it is free, or return at another time.
