What is Universal Credit?

Universal Credit will simplify the benefits system by bringing together the following benefits into a single streamlined payment:

  • Income Support
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income related Jobseekers' Allowance
  • Income related Employment Support Allowance

 Main changes

The main changes with Universal Credit are:

  • applications are made online only
  • payments are made monthly
  • the benefit is paid directly into your bank account

Will it affect me?

From 2015, Universal Credit was expanded nationwide for all new claims for single claimants:

  • with no children
  • could include housing costs

If you are already claiming any benefits, you do not need to do anything. The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) will contact you if you are affected by any of the changes.

Kingston Job Centre is no longer accepting new claims for Universal Credit. If you are currently receiving Universal Credit (or if your Universal Credit has ended in the last 6 months), you will be able to continue to claim.

If you claim Universal Credit through Kingston Job Centre and would like to speak to someone, please call 0800 328 9344.

If you are housed in Kingston but your Universal Credit claim is through a different Job Centre Plus, please call 0800 328 5644.

If you're not sure if you are living in a full service area or not please visit the GOV.UK website to check.

When will it affect me?
