About your Council Tax

Spending your money wisely

Council tax goes towards paying for our services including education and social services. An additional charge is made by the Greater London Authority and this is collected by us in addition to the charge made for council services.

Where does the money come from?

Council tax goes towards paying for our services including education and social services. An additional charge is made by the Greater London Authority and this is collected by us in addition to the charge made for council services.

There are three main sources of funding for Kingston Council:

  • 4.7 per cent - Revenue Support Grant from Central Government
  • 16.8 per cent - retaining a percentage of the business rates collected under the business rates retention system
  • 78.5 per cent - council tax

The proportion of our net budget (excluding schools) which is met from the council tax is one of the highest in London at 78.5 percent - this is because the combined total of Revenue Support Grant and retained business rates per head is significantly below the London average.

Reducing the impact through savings

Net council spending has been reduced for the last seven years.
