Supporting young people in care and leaving care

Looked after and leaving care services

Our looked after and leaving care team provides a specialist service to children and young people:
  • who are under the care of the Council on a permanent or long term basis
  • who have left care and require ongoing advice and/or assistance
Most of these children and young people are either in foster care or residential accommodation, although some may be in young offender institutions or boarding schools.

How the service works

We work closely with social workers, education, mental health workers and an educational psychologist, and are fully integrated with social care teams.

GPs, health visitors and school health professionals are also vital in making sure services are available if they're needed.

All children up to 16 living in Kingston are given a named health visitor or school nurse.

Looked after children strategy

This strategy outlines the values, principles and key priorities to support children and young people who are looked after in the Royal Borough of Kingston and London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
